Counselling

Our counselling program at Connections is offered to adults with intellectual disabilities (individuals or couples) to assist them in reaching and sustaining their potential within our society.

A family member of an individual with disabilities may also access counselling.

The complexities of needs faced by persons with intellectual disabilities are numerous and many of the same issues that would bring anyone else to counselling also apply to individuals with disabilities. However, these individuals often face a number of barriers which contribute to the complexities, including:

  • Isolation
  • Poor experiences within the education system, thereby requiring more individualized approaches to learning
  • Having little sense of control over their own life decisions
  • Trust issues

Due to their individual styles of learning and pace at which they learn, counselling for persons with disabilities is often required to extend over a 6 month to 18 month period, rather than short term.
