The Impact of Alberta's Community Spirit Program
From the Alberta government's website:
Whether it's a donation of $10 a month or $100 a month, Albertans know the importance of charitable giving. In fact, Albertans are already some of the most giving and generous people anywhere, and it is through this giving that the Alberta government has developed the Community Spirit Program. (Link to their website)
"The Community Spirit Program builds on Albertans' long history of giving, and supporting charitable groups," said Premier Ed Stelmach. "It encourages and rewards donations by individuals, and boosts funding to the organizations that Albertans support with their own hard-earned dollars." (Link to their news release)
Funds for the program are from an approximately $80-million enhanced charitable tax credit announced last year; the remaining $20-million is new funding announced during Budget 2008. The program is donor-driven, meaning Albertans will decide where they want the funding to go based on where they donate. (Link to their news release)
If you are considering a donation to Connections or other organizations, we encourage you to plan your gifts so as to have the greatest impact when leveraged against the government's matching funds.
We also thank these funders of Connections:
Calgary and Area Child and Family Services Authority
Calgary Children's Foundation
Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD)
Social Venture Partners Calgary
United Way of Calgary and Area
United Way Donor Choice Program
Wildrose Foundation
Furthermore, thanks go out to all the individuals and companies who have supported us and continue to support us. Your generosity makes it possible for us to serve our clients and provide them with the programs and services that they need.
The number of families in Calgary that include intellectually disabled members is growing in concert with the city's own growth. These families need the long-term support and counselling that Connections provides.
Without stable government funding for these vital services, Connections relies on the generosity of individuals and businesses in our community to finance the agency's operations and expansion.
