Social Network Fundraising

Social media is everywhere. With Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, YouTube, Linked In, Foursquare, and others making social networking the most popular activity on the net, it has become possible to make a large charitable impact by utilizing social media to bring people together in support of a common cause.

One way to raise money using social networking is to organize a Tweet-up or in other words a real-life meeting organized on the social networking site Twitter. For those who are uninitiated into the world of tweets and hashtags, Twitter is a free service that allows users to post 140 character or less updates or notes that other users can view. Users can follow other users and can quickly build large networks that they can call upon, in some cases, to attend fundraising events large or small. A Tweet-up can be as simple as inviting 20 people to meet for a coffee and donate their pocket change to a cause or as complex as a large gala and silent auction. Another way to support a cause you believe in by using social networking is to create a giving page on CanadaHelps.org.

You can then post a link to this page on social networking sites that you utilize like Facebook or Myspace and can encourage all of your contacts, and in turn their contacts, to donate. You can make fundraising fun by making a pledge that if donations on your CanadaHelps page reach a certain level you will fulfill a task, be it shaving your head or cooking everyone who donates a barbeque dinner. More and more, social networking is a great way to showcase the causes you believe in and help to support them one tweet, post, or note at a time.
